    A to Z Challenge 2016

    L

Lists are very helpful for keeping us on track.

When I was working I liked to make a list of what I wanted to accomplish that day and I’d also write down what I actually accomplished at the end of the day in my weekly calendar book. It was helpful for preparing the quarterly reports for my boss explaining what I achieved.

Now that I’m in school, I find it helpful to make a list of what I need to accomplish that week even though the work is listed on the syllabus. It feels good to cross items off when they are accomplished. Even though I bought an assignment book, I end up using index cards which is fine for as long as it works.

I recently started using the Reminder App on the iPhone regularly. I set the reminders with a particular time to help me remember recurring things I need to do daily (like take my vitamins -which I never remember to do) or weekly (like clean my dog’s ears since he’s prone to ear infections). In the beginning I procrastinated but often times now I complete things before the alert comes up. It took some time to train myself but eventually the desire to procrastinate went away and I just do what I set out to do.

Another app that is helpful for keeping track of lists is Evernote. You can set up different “notebooks” to organize your information and create numbered lists and even lists with little checkboxes. This free app will sync to all of your devices and can be used on a computer as well.

What kinds of lists do you keep and how do you organize them?

  • Be like a Kite

    A to Z Challenge 2016

KKites take off with wind, listen to the little voice in your head when it tells you to do something instead of procrastinating. Doesn’t it seem like it takes more energy to keep thinking about having to do a particular thing than just to do it and get it over with?

Kites have a string to keep it attached to where it came from. No matter how far you go, remember where you came from and who helped you get to your new place. Family, friends, teachers, jobs, maybe even a particular place.

Kites soar way up high above the ground and take in the big picture. Don’t get weighed down by the rocks and dirt on the earth. Like things people say that go against what you believe in or situations  when people annoy you on the road or in restaurants. Keep your mind on what is important and don’t get distracted.

When kites come down for a rest, the kite line gets rolled up nicely on the spool so it’s ready to go next time. Put everything in its place to keep your possessions and your mind in order. This way you don’t waste time and energy and end up delaying yourself next time.

    A to Z Challenge 2016

JWhen we go on a trip we make plans (sometimes) and we get to experience something new. We might even change a little as we experience new places, events, or people.

Sometimes only one of those elements has to be different to experience something interesting. We can experience a new place with an old friend, or old place with a new friend and it can be an adventure.

I went to a new place with old friends this weekend and though we don’t spend a lot of time together in our current daily lives, being with them always feels comfortable and refreshing. It’s nice that we can travel together and enjoy it so much.  I’ve gone on trips in the past few years with newer friends who at the time I didn’t know as well and the trips helped us get to know each other and I would daresay ourselves in different ways.

It’s interesting to see how everyone’s personalities and travel styles blend on a trip. For example, I like to wander off on my own for a bit and explore and take pictures and my friends just know that about me now.  On the other hand, I use the same list over and over to pack when I travel. So unless I make the painful decision to pack light, I rarely forget important items and usually have everything we need when we’re away from home.

We can go on journeys on our own, in which case everything may be new and exciting. We don’t have someone else to rely on on if something goes wrong or push us to do something out of our comfort zone. On the other hand, we’re free to completely absorb the new place.

Either way-alone or with companions, when we return from a journey, we may feel refreshed mentally [and tired physically :)] and it may give us a new perspective on our lives.

Have you gone on a journey recently?

    A to Z Challenge 2016

IInspiration is valuable in all aspects of our life. Sometimes we are bummed and a song or movie can pick us up. Sometimes we’re working on something and need a little boost to keep us going when we’re stuck.

Friends can motivate me to do thing things they know are important to me when I’m procrastinating. Fitbit alerts can remind me to get up and move.

Facebook posts can be inspirational too.FB Image

Here are two others that I like that can be sent to you as daily emails. Notes from the Universe and Art to Self.

    A to Z Challenge 2016

GIn my poetry class this week the instructor wanted to inspire us for our final poem of the semester which is about a journey. We packed up our stuff left the classroom and took a walk across campus.

There is a beautiful little medicinal garden at my university which consists of a variety of plants, a reflexology footpath, tables, and a gazebo. I walk through it occasionally. One day I encountered on a gray sparrow that happily drinking water from a fountain. I wanted to take a picture but knew he would probably fly away if I did so I just admired him for a moment and continued on.

There is also a gazebo hidden in our garden. Students have write things so there are all kinds of messages, some inspirational, some silly, some mean. One of the nicer ones was “the closer you get to the light, the greater your shadow becomes”.

Although it didn’t seem that dark in the garden, once we stepped out of it the sun shone brightly and we were greeted by a butterfly. There was a noticeable change.

Even though I walked through the garden in the past and have paid attention to the foliage, I looked at everything a little closer this time. Go outside, visit a park, notice something you don’t usually direct your attention to.

    A to Z Challenge 2016

FThis is the day I have been waiting for—F!

I’ve been doing research on Fitbit for a class project and I have way too much I can say.  Since we have to keep it brief for the A-Z bloggers who are very busy writing posts every day and visiting other A-Z bloggers there is a short version and you can continue on for more informaton if you’re  interested.

Fitbit is a company that makes fitness trackers, at it’s very core it’s a pedometer and the goal is to achieve 10,000 steps per day. There are various trackers with different types of features to help you be healthy. Fitbit also has a blog with all kinds of posts to motivate people to keep moving. For my project, I read all of the blog posts under the category of Success Stories to get a feel for what people gain from using Fitbits.

Many new Fitbit users start out by aiming to achieve 10,000 steps per day. While on the journey, they realize there are other benefits that occur when one achieves this goal. They have more energy, they feel better, and their symptoms (disease, pain, mental state) improves. The benefits they enjoy from this new lifestyle motivates them to branch out into other activities like running, yoga, or working out at a gym. It makes people who may not even think of themselves as athletic want to participate in 5Ks, marathons, or other extreme competitions. All of the success stories on the Fitbit blog, show how using a Fitbit device helps the users feel better and see themselves in a new way.  In keeping with the Fitbit mission of transforming lives, it seems the implicit idea is that walking is the gateway to other activities. This could be why the blog focuses on so many more activities than one would expect would be necessary for a pedometer.

I recommend checking the success stories if you would like inspiration.

If you would like to know more about the types of reasons people started using Fitbits please keep reading.

    A to Z Challenge 2016

E I think sometimes we make things harder than they need to be.

I decided to purchase a new exercise video to add to my vast collection of exercise equipment. So I went to the best store in the world, Target. I pondered the five or so choices in the exercise aisle that ranged from Yoga for Beginners to more advanced options that targeted specific body parts or achieved particular goals like Yoga to Improve Mathematical Abilities.

I should start out by saying I’ve been to Yoga classes a few times and never even liked them, but I have a Wii Fit Board and I love doing Yoga with the Wii. I’m not at all advanced but I’ve been doing it off and on for a few years so I considered getting a more advanced video. Why? Why not be advanced, right?

In the end I purchased Yoga for Beginners because I decided I wanted something simple and easy that wouldn’t be a big project but I could feel good that I was giving it a try.  I did the video and was very pleased with it.

Interestingly enough, I did the video once and starting using the Wii more consistently.  I liked the video but apparently I just needed the threat of something else to motivate me. Maybe easy in this case would have just been to stick with what I already had!

What are some things that you could make easier on yourself?

  • Discipline or Dancing…You Decide

    April 5, 2016
    A to Z Challenge 2016

    D

Today I wanted to write about discipline but when I looked up the actual definition on m-w.com it didn’t sound very inspiring. So I am going to tie it into another significant D word. Here is the definition of discipline.

a :  control gained by enforcing obedience or order

b :  orderly or prescribed conduct or pattern of behavior

      c :  self-control

How many times have we said or heard, “I need to be more disciplined about __.”?

I’ve said that about writing, eating better, exercising, and side projects like making jewelry that I was hoping to make some money off of or at least make as presents.

Perhaps the reason I have been having so much trouble “being disciplined” is because it doesn’t mean what I thought it meant. Control gained by enforcing….blech!

So I sat in front of my laptop for a few minutes trying to figure out something promising to say about discipline when I decided to revert back to “dancing”.

The idea that at I was originally contemplating is how easy it has been to excel at dancing because it’s generally something I look forward to doing and have always been focused on getting better at it. I didn’t have to enforce obedience or order to do it.

I have been motivated because there are people whose dancing I admire and I so I always have an image before me of what I want to obtain. I also have lots of equally obsessed dance friends for moral and social support. If anything, I have had to practice self-control for the opposite reason, to be accepting of things that get in the way of dancing like things that preempt dance class, injuries, and other interests.

I suppose the take away from all this is if we’re having a hard time being disciplined about something maybe we have to rethink our approach and consider what motivates us.

    Musings

CMy A-Z theme is wellness, which to keep things brief, to me means living a balanced life. It’s helpful to think of what we want and don’t want and maybe even make a list to go by. This could be helpful when selecting a career or job, a partner, even a gym.

The definition according to dictionary.com is a rule or principle for evaluating or testing something.
I’ve been watching a show lately called “Live Here, Buy This”.

Each episode features a Canadian couple who want to move somewhere else in the world. They choose three countries and the hosts show them two homes in each of the three countries. The couple doesn’t visit the country in the shows though, the hosts meet a realtor and the couple watches a video of the tour. In some cases the couple has visited the countries or their families are from there or they may just have a fascination for it.

The couple has to tell the guides what they’re looking for in their new location. For example, one couple from Calgary wanted less winter, a bigger city, privacy, and space to entertain. They were interested in Australia, Czech Republic and Germany. They were shown houses and apartments in each country and had select one they liked from each country.

The homes they were shown in the Czech Republic were large and very elegant and would have offered culture but it didn’t have the privacy they sought. The German house were not as modern and they didn’t like the layout. In the end the couple chose a house in Manley, Australia because it had a large spacious house with a large yard, it was close to the beach, had warm weather, and they could enjoy Australia’s culture.

This example illustrates that even when something meets our criteria, we ought to engage in another level of thinking to decide if it really works for us. This ties into wellness because we want to be mindful of what is important to us so we can live up to our full potential. However, I also think we shouldn’t be a slave to our criteria and we should be open realizing people and experiences change us…but that may be a post for another day.
