• Thoughts on the Declaration of Freedom

    Today I clicked on the “I feel lucky” link on Google.com. This led me to trending topics, which led me to read the Declaration of Independence. Which, other than what I might have read in school a million years ago, I can’t say I have looked at any time recently.

    I have a friend, Dave (I don’t usually list names, but why not give him credit for a great idea), who reads the Declaration on July 4th. Since I stumbled onto it today I think is a good tradition to start. I always feel guilty when I hear about people becoming citizens and I know I probably wouldn’t remember enough to pass to citizenship test.

    Why aren’t we more familiar with historic documents? Probably because the paragraphs are dense, and all of those commas make it scary. I’ve been reading a book called the War Against Grammar by David Mulroy. In his book, he says that students do not understand the first paragraph of the Declaration which is the following:

    When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

    Mulroy asked students to paraphrase this paragraph and most did not get the point which is basically saying the colonists were expressing the idea that if they wanted to separate from England they should not do so without first making a list of reasons of why they want to separate. Then the colonists go on to list close to 30 reasons why they are declaring themselves independent.

    As I read the list, I imagined these leaders sitting in a room and coming up with the list of their grievances. I made me think of when I’ve had grievances. Have I stopped to really think about them and decide if I should free myself from whatever was bothering? Did I declare “the causes which impelled me to want separation” to the other party?

    As the colonists state in the second paragraph of the Declaration, we shouldn’t separate for light and transient causes. So while we may feel slighted, we should stop to consider if whatever is upsetting us will still be an issue in a day, a week…a year? And is separating really the best answer? Maybe something is crappy and hard but is it worth enduring because it is a good cause in the grand scheme of things.

    I also thought about how exhilarated they must have felt putting the finishing touches on the document—declaring themselves free and starting to make their new plans. If we think something through and decide it’s best to move on, it can be scary, but it’s also exciting embarking on something new and not knowing what to expect, right?

    These are just some thoughts I had while reading the Declaration of Independence.

    Inspiration:  Kennedy’s visit to Berlin in 1963

    Since the building of a wall is a strong topic in the 2016 U.S. presidential race, I thought it would be interesting to consider another wall that was built and taken down. I am not at all knowledgeable enough on this topic to offer an opinion and I realize there are other issues to consider in the present situation that is different that what was going on in Germany in the 1960’s. I just think it gives some perspective to consider how the Berlin Wall impacted East and West Berlin and what has happened since it has been removed.

  • Seeking Cures

    I am back after a few weeks of traveling. I’m taking a different approach today, reflecting on a verse from the Bible. This one stood out to me because I have many friends and family members who have been dealing with various forms of illness recently.

    Matthew 4:24

    His fame spread to all of Syria, and they brought to him all who were sick with various diseases and racked with pain, those who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytics, and he cured them.

    Diseases strike all around us. There are some we can’t really help, and some we cause by our diet and lack of exercise. Even our pets get diseases!

    We all experience pain at some point, either mental or physical. We take medicine, try natural remedies, and visit doctors.

    Maybe we aren’t possessed in the exorcist sense that might first come to mind, but it’s hard not to think of someone struggling with depression, anxiety, or having issues coping with our modern life, isn’t it? What about some kind of substance addiction-drugs, alcohol, or even sugar?

    There are people with severe physical and mental issues. It seems like this list covers every possible issue. All these people went to Jesus and he cured them. When we wonder why there are so many bad things going on in the world, we should stop to consider if we are really going to Jesus.

    What does going to Jesus even mean?

    The people in the time of Matthew’s gospel could physically go to Jesus in Syria. In our present time, we can find him in church or by talking to someone of great faith- which can be really good because we get a new perspective.

    We can seek Jesus directly in prayer, which is really just stopping what we are doing to talk to him. They way we would call or text a friend.

    We can also find him by sitting quietly reading the Bible or some other spiritual book and then taking time to reflect on what we read – reading slowly and stopping to think about the part that stands out to us for a few minutes.

    Perhaps you have a different way of seeking out Jesus, or God, or whatever source you find peace. Just try to go to it.

  • Happy Birthday, Tracey!!!

    May Day Blogging Challenge 2016

    Today is the birthday of one of my closest friends. I am an only child who really liked being an only child, yet on occasion I’d think it would be nice if I had a big sister who was who was there for me and shared her stuff with me, and that is Tracey. I know her house is my house, and I even if I don’t ask for assistance often I know no matter what she will always help me if I do ask.

    Tracey has exposed me to things I never thought of trying. It began with my first cruise years ago. We ended up sharing a cabin and we didn’t know each other very well at the beginning of the week.  I don’t know that we exactly knew each other very well by the end of the week but a bond had definitely formed. Not too long after that we realized we could really depend on each other on which is a different role for both of us since we are the ones others usually depend on.

    The thing that I may never have experienced otherwise was traveling to France and Belgium. Though I love to travel, I was content exploring my own hemisphere. However, because of Tracey, I was able to take part in the marvels of Paris which included Eiffel Tower, Pere Lachaise Cemetery, Notre Dame and Sacré Coeur cathedrals (okay, most of that was more because of our other friend, DeAnn, but Tracey got me to Europe in the first place). The greatest thing about that trip for me wasn’t about exploring those places, it was about the fun times the three of us had together and the memories that still crack us up years later.

    The really cool thing about Tracey is she intuitively gets me, so I know when she gives me advice she will usually be right. I usually just automatically trust her judgement, but sometimes I don’t take her advice. Even then I try to be cautious because I know there is a good chance she will still end up being right.

    I always had an interest in writing and knew someday I’d start writing seriously, but it is because of Tracey that I have someone to make me sit in the seat and write. She knows just the right thing to say when I’m stuck or focused on the wrong thing and she’s gentle with me when I’m being hard on myself both in writing and regular life.

    The funny thing is I’m always concerned about relationships growing apart and I wonder how people can constantly grow together. In the short time we’ve known each other our interests have diverged leading us on different paths occasionally but our bond brought us back together and probably led us to our more authentic selves that were waiting to emerge.

    I would like to wish Tracey a very happy and special birthday!  I hope she will continue to make discoveries this coming year.

    Inspiration: 1934TWA began commercial service

     

    Finding their rows, shoving their belongings in the overhead bin MDBC2016

    or under the seats and buckling in.

    The unusual white noise of the cabin, so different than anywhere else in the world-

    The energy of a group of strangers meeting in one destination to go to another destination

    and disperse, yet caught in a state of suspension at the pilot’s hands.

     

    Anticipating adventure while watching movies

    soaring through the clouds

    back when they weren’t surrounded by movies,

    now beamed to personal devices as easily as a thought.

    Children excited by the flight attendant giving a winged pin to attach to

    their shirts and waiting for the moment

    they’re served that delicious chocolate cake.

     

    The pilot addresses the audience throughout with good wishes, news of turbulence,

    and finally wrapping up. Hoping they enjoyed their flight, and wishing them well

    on the next leg of their journey. The bird focuses on descent, it’s nose pointed at

    the earth they’ve been a parallel to for the past three hours.

    With determination it’s trajectory is downward,

    down, down, down, with the whirling of its intent carrying us forward

    like a sprinter making her way to the finish line until they touch down

    with gentle bounces that level off, until they glide like ice skaters across the rink.

     

    The pilot speaks again, announcing success.

    The passengers unbuckle while exhaling relief and excitement

    The gather their belongings and stand in their row, hunched over

    like a question marks, waiting for a chance to dart into the intersection,

    the traffic flowing off the plane, like stones tossed over the edge

    of the waterfall into unknown paths.

    I hear voices telling me what to do

    Telling me what’s right and wrong

    It may seem I am a slave to them

    Not free to choose for myself

    but in fact they lead me on where I’m meant to go

    and have kept me from hardships

    I’ve seen others endure.

     

    On occasion I wish

    I could have ignored the voices

    could have been carefree. But when I

    follow the thought through to the end

    I trust that it will turn out for the best

    for I’m still in the middle of the story

    and don’t know how it will turn out.

    Inspiration: Florence Nightingale 

    I didn’t realize this before but I share a birthday with Florence Nightingale. She was a nurse and statistician who lived from 1820-1910.  I recently read an article about her for school. She developed what is known as her Rose Charts which she devised to illustrate the observations she made regarding patients at a particular hospital who had a higher mortality rate during the Crimean War than other hospitals in the country.

    Florence Nightingale was successful because she was able to devise a system to organize and present her information to city officials in a manner that convinced them to take the information seriously. I’m sure there were times when  she wasn’t sure what she was doing, but she believed in the value of what she was doing and succeeded in her mission.

    We both need a break from always being mad

    I tried to stay and make it work
